Summer Camps Help Gaza’s Children Feel Life

Under the 16-year-old Israeli blockade imposed on the Gaza Strip, the Palestinian resistance factions found a way for Palestinian children to feel a semi-natural life in this occupied city by launching summer camps under the title “Shield of Jerusalem” across the city.

The Palestinian resistance factions have organized “Shield of Jerusalem” summer camps since July 7, which included entertainment and educational activities aimed to mitigate the psychological and social effects on Palestinian children under the suffocating blockade, especially after the recent Israeli aggression on Gaza that traumatized them.

On May 7, Israeli occupation warplanes launched deadly airstrikes on the besieged Gaza Strip that lasted five consecutive days, killing 34 Palestinians, injuring over 200 others, destroying 51 Palestinian housing units, and partially damaging 840 others.

The summer camps have been organized under the name “Shield of Jerusalem” in reference to the occupied city of Jerusalem, emphasizing that it is the focus of the Palestinian cause and the eternal capital of Palestine.

About 100,000 Gaza-based Palestinian children, most of whom are in preparatory and secondary school, have been participating in the camps across the Gaza Strip.

These camps basically aim to instill national and Islamic values in the hearts of the rising Palestinian generation and to grow their attachment to Jerusalem and Al-Aqsa Mosque, which is the focus of the Palestinian issue, said Hamas.

The movement added that such camps protect the new generation from systematic Israeli attacks and misleading policies to keep them far away from their issue.

On the other side, Israeli media claims that the Palestinian resistance movements in Gaza organize such camps to weaponize Palestinian children and teach them how to kill Israeli forces and settlers.

The Israeli Channel 13 published a report prepared by Arab affairs commentator Hezi Simantov about the summer camps in Gaza, saying that Hamas has launched summer camps under the title “Shield of Jerusalem” to instruct the boys on the need to liberate Jerusalem and the entire Palestinian territory.

It’s reported that the Israeli occupation uses children in killing operations, as do terrorist organizations, by organizing camps and events specially designed to incite children to kill Palestinians.

A video clip, previously published by the Israeli Haaretz channel, showed Israeli soldiers and special forces training hundreds of primary school students in the “Ramat Hasharon” settlement, to carry weapons and how to shoot live fire at Palestinians.

Gaza: A Decade-Long Struggle Against the Suffocating Israeli Siege

Since 2006, the Israeli occupation has imposed a suffocating siege on Gaza, transforming the Strip into a prison where hope and freedom face immense challenges.

This blockade has led to a severe humanitarian crisis, depriving Gazans of essential items like electricity, medicine, and fuel, turning them into unattainable luxuries.

The consequences of this blockade touch every aspect of life, from basic necessities to education, healthcare, and mental well-being.

Despite the hardships endured for 17 years, Gazans continue to hold onto hope, patience, and determination.

Humanitarian Crisis and Impact on Families:

Within Gaza’s prison walls, the siege has halted funding for food and cash assistance programs that support tens of thousands of impoverished Palestinian families.

Additionally, access to medical devices, pharmaceuticals, and medical consumables has been severely constrained.

More than 50% of families below the poverty line have struggled to receive adequate aid and services due to the blockade.

As a result, education, personal mobility, and healthcare have been severely affected, hindering the basic quality of life for Gazans.

Economic Devastation:

The siege has also taken a toll on the local economy, severely impacting business owners who cannot send out or receive commodities.

This has led to reduced employment opportunities and income for families and individuals.

Unemployment rates have reached a staggering 44.1%, leaving approximately 200,000 people without work.

Moreover, the decrease in exports and imports due to the siege has resulted in losses estimated at around ten million dollars, further exacerbating the economic hardships faced by Gazans.

Mental Health Struggles:

The blockade has had a profound impact on the mental health of Gazans, leading to increased stress, anxiety, and frustration among the population.

The United Nations estimates that a third of the Gaza Strip’s population needs psychosocial support to cope with the emotional toll of the ongoing crisis.

Reconstruction Challenges:

The siege has also left a significant financial gap in the reconstruction efforts, estimated at approximately 200 million dollars.

This amount includes 106 million dollars for partial damage and 94 million dollars for total damages, accumulated since the occupation aggression on Gaza Strip in 2014 and reaching its peak after the occupation aggression in 2022.

The Spirit of Resilience:

Despite facing a challenging and dire situation for nearly two decades, Gazans have shown remarkable resilience.

Armed with hope, patience, and determination, they continue to endure the pain and suffering caused by the blockade.

Their unwavering spirit serves as a testament to their perseverance and strength in the face of misery.

The plight of Gaza and its people under the suffocating Israeli siege is an ongoing humanitarian tragedy. The blockade’s devastating effects on access to essential items, the local economy, mental health, and reconstruction efforts are immeasurable.

Nevertheless, Gazans have not lost their determination to seek a better future and continue to hope for an end to their long-standing struggle. The international community must take action to address this crisis and help bring an end to the suffering of the people of Gaza.

Abbas ultimo passo Abbas last step

italiano

inglese o francese. La risposta è stata "no".

presentarsi a Jenin, a quanto pare.
concittadini in WB?

Abbas last step
On July 11th, Mohamud Abbas president of the ANP, of PLO and leader of Fatah has visited
Jenin with an escort of 1000 armed servicemen of the national Authority. Meanwhile Israeli
were doing a raid in Ramallah, and other places in area A.
Such a display of presence in Jenin including first Minister and other Fatah majors and
protected by armed forces have never been seen when the time was to defend any of the
villages and towns of area A, under ANP jurisdiction, from Israeli attacks and raids of
settlers, nor they were seen to protect the pacific weekly demonstrations in various
menaced villages, or in any other circumstance when the National Authority should have
exercised …its authority, as by law and agreements. Yet this is only one, though not
irrelevant, issue of this visit.
Another fact is that the visit was "forced" on Jenin's people who had rejected the "lesser"
but anyhow prestigious representatives of the ANP government only few days before, at the
time of the funerals.
But the truly astounding point is what Abbas said in public at this visit. My surprise, as
ingenuity never stops, was such that I asked to Palestinians if Abbas said more in Arabic than
I could find reported in English or French. The answer was "no".
So, it has only said that the ANP is united and represents all Palestinians, that it will achieve a
state and no external pressure (assumingly by Israel and any other country) will thwart this
achievement. And off course that the martyrs were to be lauded (not to be helped in life in
their battle, though): "We came to say that we are one authority, one state, one law… and we
will cut off the hand that tampers with the unity and security of our people," he said.
Each of these statements, vociferously spoken, is not only ridiculous in the context but false
and truly deceptive since they do not speak to the concerns of the people of Palestine and
of the diaspora. They are only likely to increase the distance of them from this self-
confirmed "leader" and its group of power.
No mention was apparently made about any of the issues relevant to people under
occupation and apartheid since too long, such as protecting the population from the
devastation of increase in violence on people, housing, properties and land, about the
demand for auto determination and of stop if the overall control of their lives by Israel, no
mention about the liberation of prisoners, first of all and immediately the administrative
detained and children and stop of their transfer in Israel, about the stop of ANP
administrative surrender, no proof was offered of having interrupted the military and
intelligence coordination with Israel, no position was taken on the need to to stop the
blockade of Gaza, and no mention was made of a date for national legislative and
presidential elections, required by all Palestinians of any party and religion since at least 10
years, consistently.

But the show in Jenin was not only another Abbas's charade and another abuse of position
of power to self-promote (which anyhow given the curriculum and the age is in itself a
serious problem), apparently was not only that.
Because in the circumstances around the Jenin attack on July 5 there has been the choice by
Israel and outspoken western countries (USA and EU) to "revitalize and support" the ANP,
personified by Abbas and "extend its control, to all the oPt, and namely also its return to
Gaza (1.2)
Now, this is a delusionary and not respectful plan, which can only infuriate or depress, or
both, all the people in the oPt. But this is what kicked Abbas to show up in Jenin, it seems.
And possibly the prospect of managing the funds promised for its reconstruction.
Delusionary: everybody has witness that the ANP does not have the means or capabilities or
both to produce any positive change, if not in obtaining more charity help or in training its
military that do not protect Palestinians, and that it goes along an ideological path which is
not shared by most of the people.
More relevant, it is delusionary because the resistance at least since the time of March of
return in Gaza and the unity intifada in 2021, is the result of a now long process of dialogue
and confrontation, which achieved a concordance of many tools and every generation, of
multiple forms of actions, including but not certainly limited to the use of force.
It is delusionary because this widespread resistance has taken the lead: it includes the
learning and experience of Palestinians from all party (including part of Fatah), groups and
religions (regardless of the religious prejudice of Israel and westerners); it has been showing
that "another unity" is possible and, prospectively, also "another state" different that what
Oslo designed and was never taken seriously. Here is worth remembering, that whatever
one's opinion of the defeat of Arafat, the man was killed when it attempted not to give all
up. Abbas with his more conciliatory positions was welcomed by Israel and the West as his
substitute and it proved soon a good choice for them, in 2006, by disbanding and elected
parliament.
It is possible that Abbas is really delusional in thinking he can rule again, after years of ruling
by decree, without a legislative body active, without a shred of internal democracy? After
years of imposing constrictions on Gaza and repression on its fellow citizens in WB? After
such a tight "security for Israel" collaboration? After the further encroachment of
settlements and special restrictions on all aspects of Palestinians; life?
Delusions belong to men, but not to collective intelligence and so, its plan will be defeated,
but creates other obstacles and work for the Palestinians.
If this visit signals anything it only signals the attempt to create divisions and the further
abandonment of all forms of resistance in a moment of the history of Palestine when its
existence is on the edge of being cancelled as political issue and as land issue, as to the right
to autonomy, dignity and freedom. Tens of enclaves controllable like Gaza because secluded
and ethnically pure, their size as minimal as possible, are what Israeli are attempting to

achieve, now and as fast as they can, in absence of the possibility of getting rid of all the
Palestinian people and in presence of them taking in their hands their struggle.
Abbas had not a word about any of this which is in the eyes and in the preoccupation and
behind the martyrdom of Palestinians in Jenin and elsewhere.
1- The Israeli media said that two of the unannounced aims of the massive offensive were to reimpose the
control of the Palestinian Authority security services over the territory (this was security collaboration
between the PA and the occupation state at its most obvious) and get the Palestinian people to turn against
the legitimate Palestinian resistance fighters.

Growing up amidst military occupation and conflict has had a profound impact on Palestinian children in the West Bank and Gaza.

Growing up amidst military occupation and conflict has had a profound impact on Palestinian children
in the West Bank and Gaza. It has impacted every aspect of their lives, from their safety and development to their psychosocial wellbeing and mental health.1

All Palestinian children face a myriad of protection risks, but one sub-set of children is uniquely vulnerable and suffers consistent violations of their fundamental rights: children who endure the Israeli military detention system.

Children reported they had endured a distressing or violent arrest or detention, in most cases at night; a coercive interrogation environment; physical and emotional abuse in detention; and a denial of essential services including an adequate education – all of which constitute a breach of their rights enshrined in international law.

Conclusions

94. Under Israeli occupation, generations of Palestinians have endured widespread and systematic arbitrary deprivation of liberty, often for the simplest acts of life. Since 1967, over 800,000 Palestinians, including children, have been detained based on an array of authoritarian rules enacted, enforced and adjudicated by the Israeli military. Palestinians are often presumed guilty without evidence, arrested without warrants, and detained without charge or trial. Physical and psychological abuse are distressingly common. Without condoning crimes that Palestinians have committed during decades of illegal occupation, most criminal convictions of Palestinians have been the result of a litany of violations of international law, including due process violations, that taint the legitimacy of the administration of justice by the occupying power. Many such convictions concern legitimate expressions of civil and political rights, and the right to resist an illegal foreign occupier.

95. By depriving Palestinians of the protections afforded by international law, the occupation reduces them to a ‘de-civilianized’ population, stripped of their status of protected persons and fundamental rights. Treating the Palestinians as a collective, incarcerable threat erodes their protection as ‘civilians’ under international law, deprivesthemoftheirfundamentalfreedoms, andexpropriatestheiragencyandability to unite, self-govern and develop as a polity. Any Palestinian opposing this regime, from peaceful protesters to farmers trying to cultivate their lands, is perceived as a menace and considered detainable. This forces Palestinians into a permanent state of vulnerability.

96. Mass incarceration reinforces the power imbalance between the Palestinians and Israeli institutions and settlers, facilitating settler-colonial encroachment. By shifting from ‘the security of the occupying power’ to ‘the security of the occupation itself’, Israel has disguised ‘security’ as the permanent control over the territory it occupies and tries to annex. Law enforcement has served as a tool to ensure the imposition of Israel’s occupation and racial domination and the furtherance of its settler-colonial project. This has entrenched segregation, subjugation, fragmentation and, ultimately, the dispossession of Palestinian lands and Palestinians’ forced displacement. Intended primarily to secure colonies’ establishment and expansion, this system suffocates Palestinian life and undermines Palestinians’ collective existence.

97. Through an array of physical, bureaucratic, and digital mechanisms, the Israeli regime has turned the occupied territory into a ‘panopticon’, where Palestinians are constantly surveilled and disciplined. Within this system, typical of settler-colonial regimes, widespread and systematic arbitrary deprivation of liberty and cruel and degrading treatment on a large scale, appear to form part of Israel’s state policy of domination of the Palestinians as-a-people enforced also through beyond-prison confinement.

98. Thewidespreadandsystematicarbitrarinessoftheoccupation’scarceralregime isyetanothermanifestationofIsrael’sinherentlyillegaloccupationandstrengthensthe need to hold it accountable, while bringing it to an end. It is critical that the international community recognizes that the unlawfulness of Israel’s occupation cannot be remedied, or humanized, by reforming some of its most brutal consequences. Under the UN Charter and international law, particularly the law of state responsibility, third States have a duty not to contribute or condone Israel’s settler-colonial apartheid, which criminalizes Palestinians for (re)claiming or refusing to forsake their collective right to existasapeople, andacttorealizeallconditionsthatwouldallowthePalestinianpeople to realisetheirrightsincludingtheirinalienablerighttoself-determination

The UN official tasked with examining Israel’s policies in the West Bank and Gaza presented in Geneva on Monday a scathing report accusing the Jewish state of collectively imprisoning the Palestinians, sexually abusing Palestinian women, and “challenging the very foundations of the international legal order.”

In her “Report of the Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Palestinian territories occupied since 1967,” Francesca Albanese called on UN member states to prosecute Israeli officials under universal jurisdiction, and urged Palestinian Authority security forces to suspend cooperation with Israel “that may lead to violating fundamental rights and freedoms under international law.”

“A 10,700-word report cannot capture the scale and extent of the arbitrary deprivation of liberty in the occupied Palestinian territory,” she wrote. “Nor can it convey the suffering of millions of Palestinians who have, directly or indirectly, been affected.”

Albanese has a history of antisemitism, which she has not explicitly apologized for, instead denouncing criticism of her rhetoric as a smear campaign.

In her report, Albanese accused Israel of torture, mistreating Palestinian corpses, coercing gay Palestinians to provide information, and “invasive strip searches, sexual abuse, and threats” toward women.

Israeli troops operate in the West Bank, early on the morning of May 29, 2023. (Israel Defense Forces)

“The security coordination between the Palestinian Authority and Israel has pioneered a direct connection between Palestinian and Israeli detention apparatuses,” she wrote.

“Arbitrary arrests and detention carried out by the Palestinian Authority in the West Bank and the de facto authorities in the Gaza Strip have contributed to stifling Palestinians’ rights and freedoms,” she continued, not naming the Hamas terror organization throughout her report.

United Nations Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People NGO Action News 6 July 2023

Middle East

On 8 July, the Institute for Palestine Studies will hold a full-day seminar titled “The Rise of the Far Right and the Populist Right in Israel” at Birzeit University. The sessions will focus on multiple dimensions of the rise of the far right in Israel and implications for the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.
• On 5 July, Peace Now provided an update on the establishment of new outposts near the settlements of Neve Tzuf, Mevo’ot Jericho, and Neve Erez. It also published an article noting the appointment of a representative from the Ministry of Settlements and National Missions to the Subcommittee for Settlement of the Higher Planning Council within the Civil Administration, a move it said was “another step in the annexation process.”
• On 4 July, Al-Haq issued a joint statement with other human rights organizations welcoming the release of OHCHR’s update of the UN database of businesses facilitating Israeli settlements in the Occupied Palestinian Territory on 30 June. The organizations said this long-overdue release represents an important step forward, but future updates should be conducted annually. The Cairo Institute for Human Rights Studies published the same statement on its website.
• On 4 July, the Palestinian Centre for Human Rights (PCHR) issued a press release detailing the Israeli attack on Jenin refugee camp which led to several civilian casualties. PCHR warned that the situation in the West Bank could further deteriorate and called on the international community, particularly the International Criminal Court (ICC), to take immediate action to stop Israeli crimes.
• On 4 July, BADIL Resource Centre for Palestinian Residency and Refugee Rights published a press release saying that Israeli military actions in Jenin constitute human rights violations and international crimes. BADIL called on the UN, its member states and other parties to take action to stop the attack including by imposing sanctions on Israel and providing physical and legal protection to the Palestinian population.
• On 4 July, B’Tselem published an article detailing the situation in the village of al-Mughayir, where the Israeli military set up roadblocks and a gate, disrupting the lives of its 3,200 residents. The same day, B’Tselem published another article on the situation in Jenin, saying that the international community has an obligation to act decisively to stop Israel’s attack

• On 3 July, Adalah published a letter from Israel’s Cabinet Secretary, which it received in response to a letter from Adalah denouncing Israel’s illegal settlement ‘regularization.’ In the letter, the Cabinet Secretary denied the Palestinian right to self-determination and claimed that Israel’s control over the West Bank is in line with international law.
• On 2 July, Al-Shabaka published an article titled “Israel’s National Guard: A Tool for Palestinian Erasure” which provides information about the creation of a national guard in Israel under National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, and its implications for Palestinian citizens of Israel.

Asia and Europe
• On 5 July, the Association France Palestine Solidarité published an article (in French) detailing the Israeli military operation on the Jenin refugee camp from 2 to 5 July which led to several deaths and the destruction of homes and public buildings, including a hospital. Agence Media Palestine published a similar article (in French) describing the toll of the military operation on the people and infrastructure of Jenin and its refugee camp.
• On 4 July, the European Coordination of Committees and Associations for Palestine (ECCP) issued a statement calling for urgent action in response to the large-scale offensive launched by the Israeli army against Jenin on 2 July. Noting that this is the largest operation in the West Bank in the last 20 years, ECCP asked European citizens to contact their Ministers of Foreign Affairs to demand immediate action to protect Palestinians and pressure the Israeli government to comply with the rule of law. The Association Belgo-Palestinienne issued a similar press release (in French) calling on the Belgian government to act and announcing a rally against Israeli impunity on 6 July in Brussels.
• On 3 July, the Palestinian Return Centre (PRC) issued a press release expressing deep concern over the impact of the Israeli assault on Jenin, and suggesting that the raid is an active ethnic cleansing operation targeted at the Palestinian people. The PRC called on the international community to act urgently to protect Palestinians and their property.
North America

• On 3 July, Jewish Voice for Peace issued a press release condemning the deadly Israeli military attack on Jenin, and noting that it represented the largest invasion of a Palestinian City in the occupied West Bank since 2002. The same day, Americans for Peace Now issued a statement expressing dismay at the rapid escalation of violence in the West Bank and urging Israel to protect civilians.

• On 30 June, the Foundation for Middle East Peace recorded a podcast titled “Now it is Happening to My Family: The Dispossession of Palestinians from the Old City of Jerusalem” in which Raafat Sub Laban, a Palestinian human rights attorney speaks about her family’s threat of imminent dispossession from their home.

• On 29 June, The Jerusalem Fund issued a statement honoring the life and legacy of Arab novelist and sociologist, Dr. Halim Barakat who also served as member of the Palestine Center Committee and was one of the original members of The Center for Policy Analysis on Palestine Executive Committee. The statement also included details for a memorial service to be held on 7 July in Maryland.

United Nations

They noted multiple reports of ambulances being prevented from accessing the camp to evacuate the wounded. The statement also said the attacks by Israeli forces found no justification in international law and called for Israel to be held accountable for its occupation.

• On 4 July, OCHA provided an update on the situation in Jenin, where Israeli forces were conducting a large-scale air and ground operation in Jenin refugee camp and its surroundings.

• On 4 July, UNICEF issued a statement expressing deep concern over the escalation of violence in Jenin, noting that the latest reports refereed to at least three children killed and many others injured. The statement deplored all acts of violence against children and called for the immediate cessation of armed violence.

• On 4 July, UN Human Rights High Commissioner Volker Türk issued a statement commenting on the violence in Jenin and in Tel Aviv, noting that violence begets more violence, and calling on all parties to stop killing and destroying property.

IBAN: IT59Y0501801400000011670924 SWIFT: ETICIT22XXX

update about projects in support of Gaza health in 2023

We are pleased to inform that the project with the 8 per thousand Waldensian of 2022-23 to procure life-saving tools and medicines for newborns to the public hospitals of Gaza has been completed.

Through this project we procured a ventilator for transporting at-risk infants. This was delivered to the NICU of the Nasser Children’s Hospital (1). We delivered gamma globulin for the 3 neonatal intensive care units of Shifa, Nasser and Taheer hospitals (2).

This latter is a life-saving medication for newborns and we managed with many difficulties to find it because there is a global shortage and above all was difficult to procure it for Gaza. We are proud of this achievement!

The quantity procured with the project covers about half of the annual requirement, i.e. it serves to save/protect the lives of about 3,000 newborns at risk of death, half of those born with problems that can be solved with this drug each year.

Meanwhile with the funds of free donations, we have also supplied since October 2022 about 20% of the annual requirement of another very important medicine for preserving the life of minors on renal dialysis in the Nephrology department of the Specialized Pediatric Hospital Rantissi (3).

The shortage continues in the field of medical supplies in Gaza and we urge you to continue donating to this end.

Israel’s five-day military offensive on Gaza has once again been marked by willful killings, destruction of civilian property and total impunity
